What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is the branch of Dentistry related to correction of :
• Crooked/malpositioned/haphazardly placed teeth
• Improper Bites leading to difficulty in chewing
• Anomalies in jaw growth
• Proclined/ forwardly placed upper teeth
• Inability to attain closure of lips.
• Snoring (Sleep Apnoea)
• TM Joint problems (opening and closing of mouth)
Braces
Braces are devices used in orthodontics that align and straighten teeth and help to position them with regard to a person’s bite, while also working to improve dental health. They are often used to correct underbites, as well as malocclusions, overbites, open bites, deep bites, cross bites, crooked teeth, and various other flaws of the teeth and jaw. Braces can be either cosmetic or structural. Dental braces are often used in conjunction with other orthodontic appliances to help widen the palate or jaws and to otherwise assist in shaping the teeth and jaws.
Our traditional braces are the standard orthodontic treatment option revamped with quality materials, increased comfort, and minimized visibility. We use high-grade stainless steel, thin archwires, and a wide range of elastic colors, allowing you to customize your braces.
Our clear braces, made out of ceramic, are the limited visibility variety of traditional braces. Unlike Invisalign™, which is a removable aligner, clear braces are attached to your teeth. Clear braces offer all the benefits of traditional braces with decreased noticeability.
Clear
Clear ceramic braces blend in with the color of your teeth and work like metal braces. They are the same size and shape, but are extremely popular with adults and teenagers.
These are the metal brackets and wires most people envision when they think of “braces.” However, modern brackets are much smaller and less noticeable than many adults remember. Plus, advanced archwires help teeth move faster and less painfully than in the past.
FAQ – ABOUT ORTHODONTICS
Why should I get my teeth straightened?
It is important to feel attractive! Our office takes pride in helping to improve the appearance of our patients, to help to give them beautiful teeth and great smiles. In addition to improving your physical appearance, having straight teeth can improve your dental health as well. It can make it much easier to keep your teeth clean, to help avoid future problems like gum disease, cavities, and even the loss of teeth. Having a good bite can also help to avoid problems like premature wearing away of tooth structure, difficulty biting and chewing efficiently, stress on the jaw joint (TMJ) from misalignment of the bite, and will help your dentist to keep your teeth healthy.
How do I know if I need braces?
The first two things which you can identify by yourself are:
• Aesthetics: your concern towards your smile, or appearance of your tooth.
• Function: any difficulty in biting or chewing food, lisping of words or disturbance in speech.
There are lots of problems with the teeth that can be helped with orthodontic treatment:
• Overbite – This is when the top teeth cover the bottom teeth too much.
• Protruding teeth – This is when the top teeth stick too far forward, ahead of the bottom.
• Underbite – This is when the bottom teeth in the front are ahead of the top teeth.
• Crossbite – This is when the top teeth are tucked behind the bottom teeth.
• Open bite – This is when the top teeth do not touch the bottom teeth.
• Crowding – This is when there is not enough room for the teeth to fit into the dental arch.
• Spacing – This is when there is too much room between the teeth within the dental arch.
• Tilted teeth – This is when the teeth are angled either forwards or backwards in the mouth.
At what age are kids ready for braces?
Most kids are ready for braces when their baby teeth in the back are becoming loose and starting to fall out. Sometimes kids are as young as eight when this starts to happen; sometimes they are not ready for treatment until they are in their teens. You can always make an appointment with Dr.SriDURGA personally to find out for yourself! There are some problems that should be taken care of when the patient is as young as six or seven.
• Crossbite
• Top teeth too far forward
• Underbite
• Premature loss of baby teeth
Am I too old for braces?
Not at all; we treat lots of adult patients! Many of our more mature patients prefer our less noticeable alternatives, like our Ceramic (white) braces or Invisalign.
Does it hurt?
To put on the braces is pretty easy; you spend most of your time just sitting with your mouth open while the doctor places the braces on your teeth. A few hours after the braces are first put on, the teeth can become quite sensitive to biting; eating soft foods and taking whatever medication you normally take for a headache can help. Sometimes the braces can rub on the inside of your cheek or your tongue, and can cause a little irritation; we will give you Orthowax that you can place on any area that feels sharp that can help you to feel better. After the first couple of days, your teeth will feel much better. Although we will adjust the braces during your treatment, any resulting soreness is generally not as severe as when the braces are first put on!
How much does orthodontic treatment cost?
The cost of your treatment may vary depending on your orthodontic needs, the complexity of the case, and the type of appliance that you choose.
Of course, the length of the treatment will depend on how complicated your situation is to begin with, the type of appliance you select, and our treatment goals. Usually, we try to finish most of our treatment within two years. Treatment with Invisalign is frequently somewhat shorter. Naturally, your treatment time will increase if you miss many appointments and you always damage and break your appliances!
What kind of braces do you use?
• Tooth Colored Braces
• Invisible Braces
• Expander
• Head Gear
• Rubber Bands
• Propulsive Appliances
Can I choose colors for my braces?
If you have the silver or the clear braces, you can change the color of your rubber bands each month. We have quite a selection of colors to choose from!
Will I need a retainer?
For the large majority of our patients, we recommend a retainer following orthodontic treatment. The retainer is a removable plastic appliance that helps to keep the teeth straight after the braces are removed, because the teeth do tend to shift and relapse after the treatment! Obviously, we want to minimize the amount of shifting-we want to keep your teeth looking straight and beautiful! Retainers help us to do that. We will recommend the kind of retainer we think will work the best for you.
